AirDrop: Why is WiFi necessary?

Why did Apple not allow Airdrop to operate over ethernet on a local network? I have a WiFi network running from an Apple router at home but I have a desktop hardwired to the router. To get Airdrop to work between the desktop devices in the Wifi network, I have to turn on WiFi on the desktop? Why? Seems a little inconvenient. I'd rather not have so many comms paths open.

AirDrop works by creating an ad hoc wireless network between the two devices. It requires an Airport card that can connect to two wireless networks simultaneously.

There was a hidden prference to enable it on local networks, but it never was enabled by default. I imagine becuase it would drag down a corporate network if everyone was continuously advertising itself for AirDrop.

I don't remember the command or if it stil works.
