I have previously spent hundreds of pounds on books on the app and now I can't download it again on the iPad
I really hope there is another way of me getting this application to work as this is the only Apple device I own.

Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support
have you made backups of your iPad using iTunes?
if so, look in iTunes under Apps, there you should see Apps that you have previously downloaded onto your iPad.
if not, follow the previous message instructions.
