Q: Mid 2011 i7 27" GPU.  Has anyone been able to get Apple to pony up after the warranty period?

My 2011 i7 iMac 27" GPU just shat the bed.  I had apple care extended warranty but that was up in June of 2014.  In researching this issue I discovered that Apple opened a replacement program for: HT203787: iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program.  I was never notified of this program and now feel like Apple quietly dealt with the issue without notifying all potential impacted customers.  My serial number is in the batch of impacted machines.

Has anyone been able to get Apple to pony up for this?

If so, can you tell me how you did it and who you spoke with?

Ty!

Take it in to find out if the replacement program is still being honored. I would speak to the store manager and the senior technician.

I have the exact same problem for a late 2012 iMac with Intel 3.4 GHz i7 and Nvidia GTX 680MX 2GB. It's clear Apple thought this video card was going to fix the problem, but in my case it's having the exact same problems. Vertical Lines, flickering.

I paid $2,000 for this, and a year later the video card fails. My first experience with a Mac desktop. What I thought was going to be a glowing experience already has me looking forward to Windows 10.

I took Kappy's advice and set up an appointment at the Apple Store.  They ran a number of tests and did show that the GPU was toast.  I was very pleased that it was covered under the replacement program.  I would suggest the same, set up an appointment.  They were very fair and honest about the replacement work.

    Good luck!

    Hi Petesza

When did you start getting the problem? I started noticing this problem in January 2015, but after after a couple of PRAM reset it stopped so i thought it was a software issue, I myself was not aware of this replacement program until the program started again in February and I did a thorough research on the internet and came across this article iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support

I live in Seychelles, there is only 1 Authorized Apple reseller store linked with the Africa region center here on the island. I took it in this morning and the guy diagnosed it, turns out that the VGA card is doomed and needs to be replaced. He told me that the replacement program was for a period of 3 years but in this article it states 4 years. Any advice or suggestions?

Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks

Take a copy of the program you cited and show him that it's good for four years from date of first sale.
