Airplay

I just finished watching the third episode in a series and then tries to start episode 4 but then all of a sudden I can not watch . IPhone 5s do not want to stream to Apple TV. The setup I have is Apple TV plugged directly into the TV via the HDMI cable and an Ethernet cable from the router to the Apple TV (3rd gen, model A1469 ) . Nothing has changed on either network , TV, iPhone or Apple TV . I just get a message on the Apple TV that is not working right now , please try again later. When I try to stream from the same webpage but with an Iphone 4s, same result. Try with an ipad mini 2 retinal same result. what 's wrong ?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
  2. Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
  3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  6. Restart your mobile device.

No idea why you keep posting this

For exactly the reasons I stated. This one feature is so bug ridden and failure prone it has it's own category on the forum.

may I suggest you take a good look at your network.

Sure. Lets do that. I am network engineer. AppleTV is connected via a wired gigabit ethernet, I use carrier grade WiFi equipment, I have end to end gigabit ethernet to every port in my house, and I have Google Fiber for my ISP giving me a full 1 Gigabit connection to the Internet, and the entire home network has automated monitoring so I know if I ever drop a single packet. My average packet loss on any given month is less than 0.01%. Nothing is impossible but I am reasonably confident the network is solid.

Now on the flip side we see a constant stream of posts of people that either can not get AirPlay to work, or have it randomly fail, etc. etc...... So it does not seem unreasonable that this issue in the case might not be the network.

Whilst you are a network engineer, you must be aware that some of the hardware you list is entirely irrelevant to the matter. However instead of using this as an opportunity to list your equipment, why don't you have a stab at explaining why mine and apparently James's equipment does not have the issues yours has, whilst bearing in mind that unlike your computer which has many different settings, haxies, third party extensions and the like, AirPlay on my AppleTV/iPhone is exactly the same as yours.

I assume you realise this is a support community, it's where people with problems gather, do you assume that the population of the world is afflicted with broken wrists, just because there was a couple of people with broken wrists when you last visited the doctor.

I've been participating in this community for around 8 years, all topics related to the users networks are hot topics, many people just have lousy networks, it's a fact of life and it's the same if you go to any online community, Apple or not, that discusses hardware that relies heavily on networking.

Take your Apple TV and iPhone to an Apple Store, try it out under controlled conditions, then ask yourself what was the difference between using it there and using it at home, I think you'll find the only difference is the network (or the environment, which of course affects the network)

I am talking about streaming and you know it

So are the rest of us. Via aiplay from an iOS device. which your Chrome Cast doesn't do. What's your point?

His point clearly is that his network setup is solid enough to support streaming video which is working for other devices and only AirPlay on ATV is having a problem. Which makes it quite reasonable that the issue is specific to AirPlay and not his setup.

You are the one saying it must be my network equitment. I outlined why that is unlikely to be the case.

You are assuming I buy your it has never failed for me claim. I don't even if that is actually the case you are missing the point. A handful of people claiming it works for them while so many other people are reporting problems with it that it has its own category here clearly shows there is a real problem. Even on this single thread other people are jumping on reporting it is not working for them.

The same as mine, and everyone else's and has already pointed out a huge portion of the posts for ATV are over this feature.

If you read my actual words I assumed nothing. I pointed out that this bugs and failures with this feature are constantly being reported by a large portion of the people here. So many it has its own category. YOU seem to be the one assuming that because two people said they do not have an issue there must not be one even though the majority are having issues.

many people just have lousy networks

On this point we agree. How ever. If people can maintain a streaming video connection to the iTunes Store, Netflix, etc. across the internet with no issues then maintaining a streaming video connection on just the local network should be no problem. The fact that AirPlay on a local network can not maintain the same constancy that same network gets doing streaming video over the internet is a strong indicator that AirPlay has serious issues.
