I have an iMac which supposedly has an internal modem for faxing (yes! faxing!) but it won't let me fax because it says it's "not configured" in the System Preferences. I looked up Mac Help and it doesn't address the problem. Does anybody know how to configure an internal modem on an iMac? I'm running Yosemite.

It's not a G5 (this site added the "G5"). It's a late 2009 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.1.

As far as I know you couldn't get a modem added as a custom configuration either. Can you confirm you see one when you click on System Report button that comes up in the "about this Mac" window?

Internal modems were dropped by Apple after the early 2009 iMacs. Those were the last to offer them. You'll need to find a USB modem that will work with your iMac and system. Or use an online fax service that you upload pdf files to and they fax for you. There are some freebies but those add an ad to the fax.

Interesting! The Network preferences panel is the place to configure it. Having not used a modem for more than 10 years I can't help with how to configure it though... I would imagine it shouldn't be too hard to make some guesses at the settings. Click on the modem and start entering some numbers.
I agree. I think the answer lies in the Network Prefs area. In that area, there is a pulldown menu of 20 or so modem manufacturers. If I knew the manufacturer of my internal modem, I'll bet I could configure it by myself. But I don't know where to find that info. Oh, well, I guess it'll have to stay that way.

I see what you mean. There is no mention of an internal modem whatsoever in your link, but I do see evidence in my Network Prefs and my System Report (See above). I'll probably move on since there's no clear solution.

Interesting. Seems there is hardware for it. What options do you get if you click on the Modem in the Network Preferences window?
If any configuration is possible it should be able to be done from there.
Also looking at the back of your iMac does it have a phone jack you can potentially plug a phone line into?
As I told Justin_T, if I knew the modem manufacturer's name I may be able to configure it, because it asks me to pick one of the manufacturer's name in the pulldown menu. I think because there's no phone jack in the back, that's the last nail in the coffin.
