Can't stop text ringtone on my IPhone 5C

When I receive a text, it plays a ringtone. For some reason, all of the sudden, I have not been able silence the ringtone by hitting the power button or the volume button like I used to. I want to say this started with the last major upgrade to the IOS, version 8. I cannot find a setting for this. Anyone else had this issue?
