All Messages Conversations Suddenly Blank

Yesterday, all my Messages suddenly disappeared. The avatars are still on the left side of the screen, but when you click on the conversation it has no messages in it. This is true for both iMessage and SMS conversations. They are all still correctly showing up on my iPhone.

They may have disappeared around the time that I got a low hard drive space warning (~500MB). I cleaned up the drive and had about 20GB free, then noticed that Messages was blank. I restarted the app, which fixed nothing, and then restarted my computer and they showed up again. As of this morning (still with about 20GB free) they have all disappeared and restarting the computer isn't restoring them.

I remember hearing something about this quite some time ago, but can't seem to find any other threads pertaining to this.

Any help would be wonderful.

Thanks!

Hi Ralph, thanks for the response.

Sending a message doesn't restore previous messages. To make things even more strange, I just discovered that if I send a message and then close/reopen Messages that message also instantly disappears. This includes messages that synced over from conversations on my iPhone.

I didn't use any software to clean up the drive, just deleted a few old iMovie projects.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Hi,

Did you have any luck with the Tests that Linc suggested ?

Whilst opening Messages app and setting up with the same Apple ID in a guest of different Mac User account will tell us if the app works it will not show you the "missing" iMessages as they are sent once and cannot be retrieved again by the same device.

Using the Safe Mode to boot into will allow you to use your regular Mac User account which might give us more info.

Having said that the Different Users method may catch up on the very latest ones where time limits have not been exceeded.

This may "prove" that you have lost the ability to Write to the file that stores the iMessages you have received and displays them when the app is opened (if they have not been Dismissed or gives you the "history" when talking to a person again.

If the tests that Linc suggests do provide some insight and you can see some of the older iMessages then check the following:-

Navigate to ~/Library/Messages (Use the Finder > Go Menu whilst holding the ALT key down and then selecting the Library that appears.)

There are three db items in this Messages folder that you are interested in.

Right Click chat.db and then Select Get Info.

In the Info Panel scroll to the bottom where the Ownership an Permissions are listed.

Highlight your own shortname (Same name as on the Little House Icon folder).

This should list you have Read and Write Permissions.

At the same time you can now click the little Cogwheel type icon under the List.

If you Own it the wording should be greyed out and it should read "Make Name (Me) the Owner"

Repeat for the other two .db items (not the older incompatible ones you may have or the Attachments Folder)

Let us know of the situation up to this point.

Thanks Linc for posting the walkthrough, Apologies for the slow reply.

I wanted to add another detail to the problem... not only do the messages disappear when closing/reopening messages and restarting the computer, they also disappear when switching between conversations. So you'll be talking in one conversation and it'll be logging all those messages, then you switch to another conversation, talk in that one and it'll log those messages, but the second you switch back to the first one, the conversation blanks. And what's strange is for a fraction of a section you can see those messages and then they disappear.

Guest mode behaves correctly, and Safe Mode displays all the messages up until the time when the problem started and nothing after that. However, you can engage in conversations and the messages remain.

The system is configured pretty sparsely. The only login items are Dropbox and DDAssist (for Drobo). There are 17 user-installed fonts, but as far as software goes it's all very mainstream software, most of it from the Mac App Store.

Ralph, thanks for following up. Apologies to you as well for the slow reply.

chat.db-shm and chat.db-wal were both set correctly: Username (Me) - Read & Write

When I clicked on Username (Me) and then clicked the cog "Make "Username (Me)" the owner" was greyed out.

However, chat.db was a little different. Again, it appeared to be set correctly: Username (Me) - Read & Write

But when I clicked the cog "Make "Username (Me)" the owner" WASN'T greyed out. So I clicked it, and it is now greyed out.

Hoping this will fix it! I'm going to reboot for the first time to exit Safe Mode and cross my fingers!
