Q: Download All on Playlist begins to download, but gets stuck

I have various playlists in iTunes that I created on my Macbook.  Some are manual, some are smart playlists.  I recently subscribed to iTunes match and I'd like to download all the songs from a couple of these playlists onto my iPhone 6 so I don't have to stream them when I'm not on a WiFi network (i.e. in the car).

To reproduce:

  1. On my iPhone, I open the music app
  2. Navigate to a playlist where I see at the top a button to "Download All (XX songs)" and the cloud download icon.
  3. Tap the Cloud icon
  4. The songs that have not been downloaded have an icon next to them that changes from a cloud to a spinning circle.
  5. Some songs begin to download, changing the icon again, this time to a download progression indicator, but most songs never make it past the initial spinning circle and remain that way indefinitely.
  6. If if tap on the spinning circle next to the stuck song, it initiates the download.

The songs that are stuck do not show up in the Downloads section of the iTunes app while the songs that are downloading do show up there.

This is fine for a few songs, but when I have a playlist with a few hundred items that just "spin" and won't download, this is ridiculous.

Attempted solutions that have not worked:

  1. Closing the Music app and opening again.
  2. Closing the Music app, closing background processing (flicking it up, off the screen) and opening again.
  3. Turning off iTunes Match from my iPhone, waiting until the music has cleared off my iPhone, then turning it back on.  (This actually created other issues as it tried to redownload thousands of songs at once.)
  4. Signing out of iTunes Match on my macbook, waiting, then signing back in.
  5. Soft resetting the iPhone (Holding HOME and POWER) until it restarts.

Background:

  • There does not appear to be a correlation between a 'matched' iTunes song and an 'uploaded' one.  Some matched songs have downloaded, some haven't.
  • Smart playlists and manual playlists are both affected.
  • The playlist seems to know instantly how many can be downloaded.  When I tap the Download All cloud, the number of songs listed in parentheses next to "Download All" immediately drops to a lower number (if it drops at all), then will not progress any further.
  • If a song exists in multiple playlists, it may download in one but get stuck in another.

Any ideas at all on how to fix this?  Maybe an iOS bug?  I'm running iOS 8.1.2 on an iPhone 6.  Maybe something in my account?

I am having this problem and i could not have explained it better myself.

I have been a iTunes match users since launch and this is the first time i have had this issue. It only seems to be the problem since updating to 8.1.2 because i have no issues downloading whole playlists last week right after i had purchased my new iPhone 6, which was running 8.1.1.

I guess we can only hope to have this issue resolved with a new update, however iTunes Match seems to be becoming increasingly neglected in its support, and continues to be remarkably buggy. Fingers crossed for a fix soon.

I Have this same issue but I am not using iTunes Match. It seems there isn't a solution yet?  I've tried the resolutions listed above as well.
