Q: i cloud storage

I suppose I am being a bit daft , but I understood that if I sent my photographs to i cloud , they would be stored there and not left on my Mac Book Pro , in " My Files " and duplicated, so instead of 800 plus photos , there are over 1500 , using up precious SSD space. Have I misread how to use i cloud , or have I set it up incorrectly ?. Or can I delete them from my Files , whilst leaving them in " THE CLOUD ".

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.4.1)

iCloud Drive is meant to keep your files updated on all devices from the central storage in iCloud. If you move a file to iCloud Drive, it will be stored in iCloud as a central storage, but your Mac will keep a local shadow copy, that will be updated, when the iCloud version is changed.

See the FAQ:  iCloud Drive FAQ

You cannot save space on your SSD by using iCloud Drive, because the shadow copies are stored in the user library in your Home folder. Use iCloud Drive only for the most essential documents, that you want to access from all other devices and store on your Mac anyway.

There is not yet any good documentation on iCloud and iCloud Drive, I'm afraid, the than the iCloud Help page.  http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmd0558ce3

It takes a lot of Trial and Error to figure out, how it is meant to work.

I hope, David Pogue  will soon write a "Missing Manual" for Yosemite.  His Missing Manual books are great.
