Q: idvd won't recognize the .mov file I made in iMovie,

so now i can't bring it into a dvd project.  Any solutions?  I made dvd with it before.  I'd like to be able to use the idvd themes.

    Hi

.mov is NO Video-CODEC it is a Container (sort of folder) and can contain CODECS iMovie/iDVD can or can not use.

QuickTime player or VLC-player can open and play so many more CODECs than iMovie/iDVD can use.

Open Your .mov file in QuickTime-player

    Here open inspector (cmd+I)

Read - Formatted as (Video-CODEC) AND frames per second. What does they read ?

I Made it in iMovie though. I thought I had put it on DVDs through iDVD before.

    INspector says

    format: h.264,960x540 linear PCM, 16bit little-endian sign...

    fps:29.97

is there a way to convert it so it will work with iDVD?

This is how I've done it in iMovie 11 - I haven't used it for some time and I don't know if there is a later version or if this will work (Apple may well have crippled it like other programs):

Don't use Share to iDVD, it degrades the quality.

Select Share>Export using QuickTime. In the 'Export' drop-down menu choose 'Movie to QuickTime Movie.

Click Options. Uncheck 'Prepare for Internet Streaming'.

Video: Settings: Quality - best. Frame rate - current. Compression type - try 'None'. Size - PAL 720 x 576*. Do not deinterlace. This will take around real time.

Import into iDVD and proceed in usual way.

*For UK. If in USA use suitable settings for NTSC.

    Helped a LOT !

    In iMovie

    - Share to file - BUT NOT IN HD BUT IN 480p

DVD is as standard - Interlaced SD-Video Quality. Feeding it HD will not improve if it works as iDVD then does a BAD downscaling job. Else as You see it doesn't work at all.

Then Start a BRAND NEW - iDVD PROJECT so that You don't get the iDVD BUG ! It always comes when using an old project resulting in many problems but the most significant is that all Chapters noe startcas Chapter One.

    Good Luck

I Have already made the movie. It's no longer in iMovie. So is there nothing I can do with the existing .mov file?  It no longer shows up in imovie I finished the project and exported it. Is there anyway to get it to work with iDVD without remaking it?

I don't think You can do this without cost. But if You buy a Video converting program.

With this You can convert it to a CODEC that iDVD will use OK.

I would first try to use Burn - a fairly good DVD authorng program that is free.

Roxio Toast - is far from free - but has by many good things also a Video converting function - but can burn Video-DVDs too

Still if You burn from them You don't get the iDVD themes.

    So option's are:

    - Convert it to something iDVD can use

    - Re-creat the movie in iMovie and Share in a way iDVD can use and do Your Video-DVD and see that it works OK before discarding the iMovie project

    - Or use Burn or other Video-DVD authoring program

You can try using Handbrake to convert the .mov file to one that iDVD uses.  I've not used it my self but it's a well known open source application.

TThanks. I will try a conversion program. Disappointing that both programs are apple and they haven't set up a way for them to work together.

You have to remember that iDVD was discontinued over 2 years ago and has not been supported since.  Technology goes on but iDVD doesn't.
