Q: Burn from .dvdproj help needed!

I have a movie on idvd which creates a .dvdproj file and it comes up with an error message - encoding issue when i try and burn the dvd. I have read other people having the same problem here and that saving as a disk image is the key but I have the same encoding issue when trying to do this even! . It seems to go all the way through rendering the movie and then at the end it says there was a problem encoding the movie. I'm completely stuck and desperately need the dvd this evening.

Can anyone help?

Have you edited the movie since adding it to the iDVD project?  If so that encounters a known bug with iDVD and you will be best served creating a new project and adding the movie again.

How did you add the movie to the iDVD project in the first place?  If from iMovie it should be via the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option (if that version of iMovie has that option) and not the Share  ➙ iDVD option.

If you have the movie as a file then try creating a new project and start over from scratch.  Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    HI

The .dvdproj file is not to be burned but as a back-up still with problems like the iDVD BUG. So if You want a Video-DVD then You must burn from within iDVD application or from within this Save as a DiskImage - then save this with Disk Util tool (if it plays OK on Your Mac).

    This because two things.

    - Video-DVDs has it's own encoding (sort of .mpeg2 code)

    - The structure on the Video-DVD is also special - bit of why copying directly from DeskTop doesn't work but results in a Data-DVD.

Hi Old Toad, thanks for your reply. I've not edited the movie since adding it to the idvd project. I added it by opening iDVD and then dragging the iMovie in as it suggested. There was no option to do Share - media browser nor share - idvd.

Do you know how I can get my iMovie in to idvd without it ending up in this issue?

    Thanks so much,

    HI Sophie

What version of iMovie do You use ?

    iMovie'08 version 7.0.x or iMovie'09 version 8.0.x or iMovie'11 version 9.0.x or iMovie'13 version 10.0.x ?

You say iMovie'08 and here You find Share to Media Browser - SELECT - Medium ! nothing else ( ev. Large if Audio doesn't migrate over to iDVD - quality will not be better but lose slightly due to bad downscaling in iDVD)
