Q: MacBook Air External Display Problem

Kit:

MacBook Air 11" [2011] running OS X Mavericks

LG Flatron W2243S

MiniDisplayPort to VGA Adapter

VGA Cable

When I connect my MacBook Air to the screen the writing becomes blurry and, in comparison to my Mac, the display looks really bad. I can see from many other posts that this is a common problem. Is there a simple way to make the screen look sharper?
