Rear camera fails on iPad Air 2 (iOS 8.1.2)

HI all, has anyone faced the problem where their rear camera (the good camera) doesn't work and just shows a black screen in the camera app?

I'm trying to understand if this is maybe an iOS bug or whether i have faulty hardware. i can find nobody talking about this online so I think my camera is faulty.

The device has been rebooted multiple times, however I haven't tried a restore yet (which I will when I get home). The front facing camera does work but seems to fail when using Slo-Mo or Time-lapse modes.

Hi johnmacward,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I know that it can be concerning when the camera on your iPad is not functioning the way you expect. Please refer to the attached article for information on troubleshooting an iOS camera with a black screen.

You see a closed lens or black screen

If you see a closed lens or black screen when you open the Camera app, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
  2. Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
  3. Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
  4. If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping User uploaded file (camera swap icon). If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.

Cheers,

Joe
