Q: Video Sticks After Rendering

Good evening all,

Hoping one of the many pros here can assist me with a new problem I've encountered?

I have been using my copy of Final Cut Express 4 HD heavily for a couple of years on an Early 2008 Mac Pro (I believe OS 10.9.4) without any trouble. I have since upgraded to the latest Mac Pro (black cylinder) with Yosemite OS installed.

Today, I loaded Final Cut Express 4 HD without any trouble however I noticed the general interface performance was slightly sluggish. Despite that, I imported several GoPro video files and previewed, which played fine. However, after dropping into the timeline and rendering, the footage would play audio fine but the video would stick on two frames going back and forth like a terrible GIF.

Does anybody know how I can fix this, or if this is due to being incompatible with Yosemite? Hope it can be fixed, as iMovie is terrible!!!

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Did you convert the GoPro files into an FCE friendly format?  FCE only works natively with QuickTime DV (SD) and AIC (HD).  Once converted to the proper format, you shouldn't have any problems other than those associated with using a very old application on a new OS.

    Hi David,

Thanks for the quick response. I've not converted the files yet as they played fine in the FCE preview screen. The problem only occurred after rendering. I'll give this a go - I've been fine using .MOV files in the past. The GoPro files are .MP4 - any suggested best methods of converting?

    Kind regards.

The Viewer window can play just about anything - much like playing in QuickTime Pro.  However, once you drop a clip on the Timeline, if it doesn't match the Sequence settings there will be problems ... and as you found out, sometimes even after you render.

I usually use Compressor, MPEG Streamclip or QuickTIme Pro to convert.
