Q: MacBook crashing every so often with a some sort of memory leak? Need help to pinpoint cause.

I've only owned this Macbook for about 4 months now and it has started giving me this save memory leak issue every so often. I am not 100% sure if this is the proper place to post this kind of stuff, but I've tried to uninstall some things that I've added in the last month (which is when it started). No luck.

Can anyone tell what it might be just by looking?

You might try and run the "etrecheck" software on your mac and post the question and the etrecheck results to the "Yosemite" discussion forum since it's more likely to be an OS X issue than a MacBook issue, but that's really a gut feel on my part. You can download the software from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    good luck

I'm going to bet it's a problem with one or both of these:

    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp 4.3.18

    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt 4.3.18

    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB 4.3.18

    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv 4.3.18

    com.razer.common.razerhid 10.57

Uninstall both VB and Razer software using their respective uninstallers. Remove the Razer mouse and use the standard Mac mouse. See if these kernel panics stop. If they do then add back VB first. If all is well then the problem is the Razer mouse or driver.

This is a kernel panic problem. There is no need for EtreCheck. EtreCheck is a replacement for System Profiler except that it presents the more relevant information of the report in a way that doesn't require you to hunt for it. It is not a solution to a problem. It's bad enough we have to rummage through more and more relatively useless EtreCheckk reports. It's being sorely misused and abused. Furthermore, it really doesn't provide the information needed to figure out a kernel panic which is usually a hardware problem and sometimes caused by malfunctioning software.

The likely problem in this particular case is revealed in the panic report posted. The particular information is in what is identified as "the backtrace."

Sorry to hear you're not a fan of etrecheck. Seems like you have a bad opinion of it and some people don't. Personally i've seen a lot more panics from problematic software than problematic hardware. Tracking down problems based on kernel panics is nothing I've ever had much luck with. Do you have a suggestion for how to really use a kernel panic or crash report to see where a problem is really coming from? The one above lists about 100 different components in the trace - the original one from WindowServer. Black magic and voodoo and darts are about as useful sometimes ;-)

My fault on choosing the wrong category forum!

Kappy, I believe the culprit is the Razer driver. It's the only thing that I've added to the system since a month ago. I'm using both a Razer keyboard and mouse and when the computer reboots from crashing, neither of them work unless unplugged and replugged in.

I will uninstall the Synapse drive, remove the mouse and keyboard and see what that gets me.

Thank you both for lending a hand!

I'm sorry to have conveyed that impression. I do very much like EtreCheck, but it is completely misused by too many people who seem to think it's the answer to all problems. If is excellent for what it does. I helped beta test it for the developer. But it's a tool best used when a helper specifically asks for it when it is needed. That isn't for kernel panics. It may well be that some software can cause the panic, but the panic itself is generally in hardware. You can see that in the first few lines of the report. I urge you to learn more about them:

Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic

    OS X- About kernel panics

Technical Note TN2063- Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics

Tutorial - Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panic

    What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X)

    OSXFAQ - Troubleshooting Kernel Panics

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.

You will find a wealth of information about panics in the above references. There are many panic reports that simply don't give us any clues as to their root cause. They can be frustrating to deal with. But when someone is having a kernel panic EtreCheck is simply not the tool you whip out first or even second.

Good luck learning and a Happy New Year.

Thanks very much for the list of things to learn more about kernel panics. Will make it one of my New Year's resolutions to try and learn more about how to use them to see what is really going on with panics I run into. Are the lessons learned from these links helpful with crash reports as well or just kernel panics? Thanks again and I promise to try and retrain my brain to not think so quickly about etrecheck when I see another panic ;-)

Happy New Year to you as well...

    Hi,

Since your question doesn't have anything to do with the original question, you might want to start another topic - you've a better chance at getting help if your question is at the start of a discussion than if it's in the middle of something having nothing to do with your question. This way people see it listed explicitly and can immediately see if they might have somehthing to suggest.

    Good luck...

Crash reports are virtually useless. They are intended to be used by the software engineers. They are almost un-understandable. Worse than a panic report. Both are meant for the engineers and require software tools and additional hardware to resolve. Anyone here only knows a few things relevant to a panic report.
