Q: How do I reassign a child's Apple ID to an iPad under my ID (so we can take advantage of family sharing)?

I have set up family sharing - no problem between my wife and myself, as we have separate Apple IDs, however I have created a new Apple ID for my 8 year old daughter (who has her own iPad Mini which is registered to my Apple ID) - I would like to swap my ID for her ID on this iPad and then use family sharing. Do I have to do a full reset? That would involve reinstalling all our previously downloaded applications? Many thanks for any advice in advance.

I am not using Family Sharing, but I know that you do not have to do a factory reset in order for your child to use her ID. As far as I know, you can sign her into her own ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out and then sign in with her ID. Since you are already using Family Sharing, you probably know how to go about sharing family purchases, but just in case.

Thanks for spending time to reply. Again, I appreciate any further advice.

I have already changed the Apple ID in iTunes, but the sticking point is actually the iCloud Apple ID - I can't seem to find anyway of changing this apart from resetting the whole device. The problem with this is that all of her photos and app data are being stored under my iCloud account, and I'd very much prefer her to use her own iCloud service (all her photos appear in my photo stream, which includes hundred of butterflies and my little pony pictures from the apps that an 8 year old would use!), so my iCloud drive gets full, whilst hers remains empty.

I did try a "reset all settings" but on reboot it didn't prompt for an iCloud ID.

I've tried playing around with iTunes as well - if I go to Account Info> Manage Devices, I can see a list of devices associated with my Apple ID (9 in total!) It says computers and devices can be associated with a different Apple ID once every 90 days... I've removed the iPad that I believe is my daughter's (and I also tried my wife's), but this makes no difference either - iCloud is still associated with my ID.

I also went to www.icloud.com and I can see all the devices associated with my iCloud account - but can't change anything.

My daughter has also inherited my wife's old iPhone5, which I did a full reset for and successfully associated with her iCloud account - as it was a new device to her this wasn't a problem... However, her iPad has lots of game progress (like my little ponies) that would be lost with a full reset.

Anybody have a solution? Thanks in advance.

Sorry if this is simplistic - but what happens if you go into Settings --> iCloud --> Sign out and then sign back in with your daughter's ID on your daughter's iPad Mini?

I Don't want to give you bad advice because, like I said, I'm not using Family Sharing.

SInce your daughter was using your Apple ID, any game progress she has is still associated with your ID and you cannot change that. You cannot transfer purchases or app data from one Apple ID to another one. So she will always have to use your ID if she wants to keep that data. It would be a different situation (or at least I assume) if she had downloaded the app from your purchased apps via Family Sharing and then started playing the game with her own ID. But she was playing under your ID and you cannot change that.

As for the iCloud account, the same applies. Since she was using your Apple ID, the backed up data that she had, as well as her photos, are in your iCloud backup and that cannot be changed either. You can import her photos to a computer and then sync them back to her iPad and then remove them from your Photo Stream.

I hate to keep repeating this because I feel like I may not be providing the help that you need, but I know very little about Family Sharing but I am quite certain about then other points that I made. If nothing else, we can keep the dialog going until someone else joins in that is using Family Sharing.

I think I may have an answer to your problem as I had to assign a new Apple ID to my brother's iPod (he was using my dad's ID and their iCloud storage was alluded up).

So after experimenting a little bit, I found a way to sign into a different Apple ID in iCloud.

    1. Go into Settings

    2. Scroll down to iCloud

    3. Scroll down all the way to where it says "Sign Out" (it might say "Delete Account", this won't actually delet it)

    4. A pop-up window will appear, tap "Delete"

    5. Next, I would recommend tapping "Keep on My iPad"

    6. Now it will exit the iCloud tab, so scroll down and tap iCloud again and sign in with your daughter's Apple ID

    7. Once again a pop-up window will appear, I recommend tapping "Merge"

    8. You will be prompted if you want to enable "Find My iPad", you may or may not want to enable it.

    THis shouldn't harm

This shouldn't harm any data. When I did this all games/apps kept their progress.

Sorry for the double reply, I accidentally tapped "Reply" (I'm on my iPad mini)

The best place to start when trying to troubleshoot is always with the most basic things. Good work!
