Q: Disc Utility warning

I hope im in the right place, I have iMac 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo running 10.6.8.  I have problems with iPhoto so a ran disc utility repair disc which put up the following

WARNING  SUID file system/library/core has been modified and will not repair

I have no idea what that means but I have a feeling it has something to do with iPhoto being messed up. Any suggestions please but please keep replies simple this is way out of my comfort zone.

Mike.

Mike, it sounds like there's a problem with the drive, but most likely it has nothing to do with iPhoto per se. I'm guessing you ran Disk Utility directly without booting the Mac in Recovery Mode, or from an Apple OS install disk? In other words, you ran DI just from the Utilites folder? If that's the case, the issue is you can't repair a disk that is being used to run the system at the same time. There is a way round this though.

Hopefully, you still have the DVDs/CD's that came with the Mac? If so, you need to insert the OS install disk and restart, holding down the "C" key, then run Disk Utility again. Here's a page I found describing nicely what to do and what you'll see:

No problem. Come back and mark the question as solved if this works (I'm 99% confident it will), it may help other people.

#1, it should say in small type something about booting from the disk and holding down C

Make an EXACT note of the full error text that appears in Disk Utility (a photo may be enough to compare later), compare it to the ones that are known to be not a problem…

Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore - Apple Support

I'd suggest you explain what exactly in iPhoto is 'messed up' if you want help with that, these error messages may not be a problem at all.

Ok I ran the disc utility and it came up with one error in red

Invalid volume Block Count will not repair

I then ran the final repair permissions and it said HD successfully repaired

So I went back to Disc utility on my desktop and ran verify permissions and the same warning SUID file system/library/core has been modified and will not repair. The exact warning is not on the list (Unless I missed it) a lot of similar one.  The problems with Iphoto should I go back to the iPhoto group, they sent me here because of the SUID warning

OK, first job is to make sure you have a full backup of everything on the hard drive. Are you using Time Machine? Or do you maintain a backup on an external hard drive?

You need to be precise in logging your error messages.

That SUID error 'sounds OK' but you haven't given us the full message (hopefully you did find that in the list of known erroneous messages).

Permissions errors are generally not as bad as errors in the underlying disk.

The invalid block count is not a good sign. If that cannot be repaired you will need to look at disk repair tools like Disk Warrior. It's possible the disk is failing, which can result in the Mac becoming unbootable etc.

I personally would make a full backup of this disk if you haven't already done so. If you make a bootable copy (via Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) you can boot from that to attempt to repair the internal disk too.

Then I would suggest booting from the DVD again and wiping the internal drive (reformatting it), and then restoring to where you were using your most recent Time Machine backup. Read a full description of this and how to do it here:

Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system

Once you've done this I would run Disk Utility again to make sure its now working properly.
