Apple Mail. I want to add color to outgoing fonts.

I click on New Message. Then i click on the COLOR icon just above the TO: line. A box opens with 15-20 colors to choose from. I click on Red and the color red fills the space to the right of the Magnifying Glass above the list of colors. When i begin to type my email message, i want the type to be red. One time in 5 , it works. 4 out of 5 it doesn't. I have tried double-clicking on the name of the color (Red). Didn't help. I have tried choosing the color and then closing the color "box" before typing. I have tried leaving it open while typing.

When i went to Apple Support there were many suggestions about setting Email Preferences..... but i don't care about them. (That is what i will see when i read my mail). I want to send an email to someone else and have the recipient see red (or any other color) lettering. Apple had guides for showing different colors for previous responses to my email.... i don't care about that. They had suggestions for putting quotes in color.... i don't care about that.

What is the exact thing i need to do after clicking on the COLOR icon in order to have my typing appear in that color?

2nd. What does the "magnifying glass" do if i click on it? It shows up to the left of the bar filled with the color i choose.

Hi BBB303,

Happy New Year! The quick answer to your question is to type the body of your message first. Then select the text, click on the font color button in the toolbar, then select the color you want.

In Apple Mail preferences, you can change the default color of all of the messages you write (compose) from black to red. Click on the Help command in the menu bar for more information about Mail using OS X 10.5.8.

Message font

Select the font and font size to use for composing and viewing messages.

If the sender used a specific font for a message, that font is used when viewing the message.

Thanks, Judy. Your suggestion did not work. I typed my response and then selected the color. Nothing happened. But if i continued to type further, my message appeared in color. So you may have helped me solve my problem. I was previously not able to select a color and then type ( except 1 time out of 5). Now it seems to be working.

When i click on Red in the lineup of colors, the color red appears in a box above the list of colors. But i was wondering if i need to make one more comman to "apply" or "save" or "submit" my color selection. Just clicking on the color (previously) did not seem to make my selection work. I even tried hitting Command-S to "save" it. That did not work. Double-clicking did not seem to work.

I will keep experimenting. I very much appreciate you taking the time to help me.
