Q: Mid 2012 Macbook Pro battery drains quickly in sleep mode

I recently received a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (Yosemite 10.10.1) and the battery drains fast in sleep mode. It will drain a few percent within a few mins while it is in sleep mode and will be completely drained in less than a few hours. Below I have provided the Battery Information from the System Report and also the output form pmset -g log. The log from pmset looks to have a lot of activity, but I'm not sure how to make use of the data. I can hear the HDD spinning up approx every 30 seconds when it should be asleep. Please let me know if you have any information that may be useful in resolving this issue.

    I am suspecting that you have some third-party system mods or utilities installed that are causing your issues. There is nothing wrong with your battery data numbers.

     

    Although not a fix, you can use Etrecheck to let us view your config without revealing any sensitive information that might accidetnlally appear when using other methods. Etrecheck was written by one of our most valued contriburotrs here expressly for allowing users to help each other by seeing known issues.

    First, try resetting the SMC. This can help with some power- and sleep-related issues.

     

    If that doesn't help, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver. Is the Power Nap setting turned on in the Battery settings? If so, turn it off.

    If you can provide some info on it and why you need it, we can further investigate to see if it causes battery issues.

     

    There is also the procedure in this Apple article:

    It takes less time to do the test than to read the article but is quite good at solving battery issues. Please note that, in Step 3, you need to make a change for OS10.9 and 10.10. The changing of focus from the program's default to the required "All processes" is now moved to Activity Monitor's "View" menu:

    When properly set, the title of the AM window will indicate "Activity Monitor (All Processes.)"

     

    What is not clear in the article is that it works poorly if you run the procedure immediately after a restart. You need to use the computer normally for a half-day to  a day so the suspect processes are activated when you run that test.

    I performed the SMC reset as provided in the instructions. Is there a way to confirm that a SMC reset was performed? I did see the LED on the MagSafe power adapter change from Amber to Green and back to Amber when I did the reset.

     

    My Mac doesn't have a Power Nap Setting option under the Battery Settings. I think I need to do an update to the SMC. I see on OS X: About Power Nap - Apple Support that MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is listed. I have a Mid 2012 MBP, but not with Retina. Should I be trying to update the SMC?

    I used AdwareMedic to remove the Searchme adware, but I cannot seem to get it removed from cache. I followed thomas_r's recommendation in this article In EtreCheck, got rid of these items but they still show up??? and choose Clear History and Website Data from the Safari menu, but I still have Searchme listed when I rerun EtreCheck.


    The pia is my vpn app that starts up on login.


    I looked for runaway apps as described in the article you linked, but all processes have very low CPU utilization (less than 2% in most cases) and the activity monitor itself was around 6%. I will check again later today.

     

    I think I need to track down what processes are causing the HDD to spin up while it's asleep. I can hear it spinning up multiple times in a minute.

    Not really. My big complaint about the SMC reset procedure has always been the complete lack of any kind of feedback as to whether it was done or not. If the problem continues, try repeating the procedure again, just to make sure you've done it properly.

    Ahh, your Mac must be too old to have that feature, then. That's one possibility out.

     

    Without Power Nap, nothing really is going on when your machine is asleep. It really shouldn't matter what software is installed if the battery drain is happening during sleep. Of course, one possible question would be: is the machine actually asleep? It's possible a low-level process might keep the machine from sleeping when the lid closes, in which case it would continue using power. This shouldn't happen, but it can with software that installs kernel extensions to modify the system at a very low level.

    Yeah, that seems to be difficult to do without going and finding the specific file in the cache and deleting it. However, doing that really isn't important. The fact that the extension is still in Safari's cache doesn't mean that it's still active - it definitely is not - and it will be removed from there eventually all by itself.

    Does anything look suspicious from the pmset -g log that I supplied in my original post? It seems to me there is some information that could be helpful. It continually does an Entering Sleep state due to 'Maintenance Sleep' followed by some Acks and then a DarkWake. Is the DarkWake bringing it out of sleep. A snippet from the pmset -g log is pasted below that contains the Maintenance Sleep and DarkWake.

    The fast drain seems to be from my ASUS external monitor that I have connected through HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter. I disconnected the external display from my MBP and the pmset -g log (below) seems to be more reasonable. I will do some more testing. If it is the external monitor causing the system not to sleep properly, maybe I can find a solution. Anyone that has had similar issues or know of a solution, please chime in...

    I forgot you had already posted EtreCheck results, and those don't show any third-party kernel extensions, so that can be ruled out.     Not particularly, though I don't really know the full meaning of much of those logs. I can tell you, though, that I see very similar entries in my own logs, and am not experiencing the problem that you are. (See the excerpt below.) I don't think the logs are going to be particularly useful in determining what's going on.

    I have confirmed that the fast battery drain during sleep only occurs when I have an external display connected. I booted into safe mode with the external display connected and selected sleep from the apple menu. While the displays went black, it did not appear that the system went to sleep after waiting a few minutes. The led on the front never went to "breathing" on/off and I could hear the disk drive. I tried to "wake" by pressing the space bar and other keys a few times, but the screen stayed blank.

     

    Also, if you look at my original log from pmset and in particular the time stamps, you will can see DarkWake [CDN] due to EC.DisplayDetach/Maintenance occurring about every 30 secs to minute while it is suppose to be in a sleep state.
