while muted videos play full volume

I've always wanted to ask about this. When my iphone has the mute button flipped with mute activated, I notice the following:

1 - don't hear phone calls when I receive them

2 - don't hear text messages when I receive them

3 - don't hear any notifications of any kind

4 - my alarms do go off

5 - when I play a video either in safari, youtube or from my photo album - it sounds at full volume

all the above I can understand except #5. Doesn't this sound like a bug?

I think videos should be muted. there are some times when I want to watch a video silently because I don't want to disturb others.

This is how it works. If you were to play music from the music app, it would also play as well. There is the thought that if you intentionally play something that would come through the speakers, it would play. If you want to watch a video silently, plug in your headphones.

Thanks Chris. Well that would be great if I had headphones available all the time.

I am new to this discussion board? this is "by design" for apple ?

1 - sometimes when I open safari if there was a video from the past that was playing, it will resume playing (so when my phone is on mute) this is one of those times that is frustrating. I do try to close my tabs in the browser on a regular basis to avoid this.

2 - sometimes there are videos that I didn't realize would start playing in safari and so this is frustrating

3 - I agree all the other instances where if you play something one might expect sound. So I understand that.

I guess if I were to request an enhancement it would be to have an advanced setting where we could decide what "mute" means. So that the default might be what it is today, but I might be able to choose "mute" to mean absolute silence if that's what I wanted. What I find myself doing quickly is using the volume controls to turn the sound all the way down. It is not instant and so I have to click multiple times. It's usually when I'm in a meeting or something where it accidentally starts playing something which I try to silence ASAP So that's why I'm mentioning this.
