Jan 3, 2015 1:00 AM in response to evianloverby spudnuty,Hello evianlover and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
So I'm not totally sure that this will work. However when I look at this:
Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers - Apple Support
I don't see 10.10.X in the 2014 models.
"
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) Jul 2014 10.9.4 13E28 MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) Jul 2014 10.9.4 13E28" "
and since Yosemite was released Oct 16, 2014 it might be that the native system in your machine was 10.9.4.
Have you tried internet recovery and see what happens? Or called Apple and see what they say?
It seems logical that they couldn't ship a machine with an operating system that wasn't released until October of the year the model was introduced.
"I was hoping it could run Mavericks since I saw these models running it in the store just a few months ago."
That's what I saw also but not they're all running Yosemite.
Also there's this but try Apple and Internet Recovery first.

Jan 4, 2015 12:33 PM in response to spudnutyby evianlover,Hi, just an update - thanks for that! So yeah, it seems like my Mac is 'made' for 10.9.4.
Then.. I went in to the Apple store, and they told me that it's somehow 'impossible' to go back! What?! The guy even said, "that would be like us letting you go back to the past" and then proceeded to tell me how great Yosemite looks. I don't care! I love the look of Mavericks.
What is internet recovery?

By following the directions, you will be connected to the Apple servers which will allow you to install the original OSX, which presumably is Mavericks. Do backup your data first.
You will need a solid Internet connection.
Ciao.

Jan 4, 2015 1:25 PM in response to evianloverby spudnuty,So OGLETHORPE just explained to you is how to do an "Internet Recovery". Let us know how that goes.

Yup they're really pushing Yosemite.

I tried Internet Recovery (thanks by the way) and it only lets me/ gives e an option to reinstall Yosemite. -

Jan 4, 2015 1:31 PM in response to evianloverby Tristan Ludvig,Yes you can buy a Mavericks disk or you can get a copy of mavericks on a flash drive but i suggest using Yosemite even if you have problems with some gaming and stuff like it with java 8. I also suggest doing this yourself as its a relatively simple task. I have a friend that did this when he accidently installed ubuntu on his late 2010 macbook air 13 and he had a Mavericks disk lying around and he installed mavericks. As long as you have a mavericks disk this is easy but I encourage not to do this as Yosemite is great it just takes some learning. Have fun with your Macbook Pro Retina I love mine and hope you enjoy yours.

Jan 4, 2015 1:34 PM in response to Tristan Ludvigby evianlover,Thanks man! When did you get your Mac/ how long have you been a Maccie (just out of interest). Is there an easy way to get a copy of Mavericks? I don't have CD drive in my Mac.

Jan 4, 2015 1:37 PM in response to evianloverby Allan Eckert,I think you should listen to Peter. I have no idea where Tristan is coming from but it doesn't sound correct to me.

You cannot purchase Mavericks on Disc. You cannot even currently purchase Mavericks to make a bootable Disc or USB. The last OS X to come on Disc was Snow Leopard 10.6.3
Good Luck

Jan 4, 2015 1:42 PM in response to evianloverby spudnuty,Hmm, yup AFAIK you can't buy that disk.
You can try looking around for it or email me.
I'd personally would like to go "Back to the Past".

Jan 4, 2015 1:44 PM in response to evianloverby Tristan Ludvig,Peter is correct you could find copies of mavericks. I didn't know where I was coming from I have friend who has an old Mavericks recovery disk yet I don't see the point of going to mavericks just use Yosemite espically with a rMBP as there fast and can handle it with ease.

Jan 4, 2015 1:46 PM in response to spudnutyby evianlover,Glad you share my appreciation of the 'old style' of Apple that we all fell in love with!
I'm guessing there are versions of Mavericks online..?
