iPhone 5C tells me it's too hot to use when it's cold

I just purchased a new iPhone 5c. As I am not allowed to bring it in to my workplace I must leave it in my car. It was 29 degrees when I got out of work. I tried to make a call and all I got was a screen with a picture of a red thermometer on it telling me that my iPhone was too hot and that I needed to let it cool before I use it again. The phone did not feel the least bit warm or hot. After about 8 minutes warming up my car the phone was fine. This problem repeats each day I work if the ambient air is in the 20's. I never had that problem with the Samsung phone I gave up. Is the phone defective? It seems worthless to have this if I cannot use it under 30 degrees. Have others had this problem?

The iPhone is clearly too cold not too hot. I appears that Apple is using the same error message for too hot or too cold. What it really means is that the temperature is out of the operating range of the iPhone which is 32ºF - 95ºF.

Note that some temperatures may be too high or too low to safely store an iPhone let alone operate it. Also just because the Samsung phone didn't complain about temperature doesn't mean that it is good for the phone to operate it at low or high temperatures. One big problem with low temperatures is that condensation can form inside the cold phone when it is brought into a warm environment.
