Q: IMAC hard drive available capacity incorrect

I have a mid 2011 imac 27"- I moved files to OWC backup drive.  Trash is empty-  says i have 72 gb available.  If i go to hard drive it says I have 72 gb avail,  the "users" says 72 gb available.  But if I open "USERS" and check the 8 items and add them - it is a total of 368gb....so i should have over 600 gb available?

How do i make it recalculate this.  seems to be counting the external drive contents against the imac hard drive total.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), iOS 8.1.2, OWC external 500GB usb drive

I buy OWC drives- they come ready for use as a mac external drive- no need to do anything other than use it.

Still, I advise the format, and also not install the software (OWC does not deliver it with the disks, I think).

I finally found my own answer.  I actually moved all files off my imac, wiped disk and started over. after only 3 months, i again had 80 gb available on the HD, but when i looked at known files, it added up to 400.  So, i downloaded Disc Inventory X.

What a god send!  It found a firefox file that was 440GB- a TEXT file!  i deleted and all is well again.

But, i cannot find out how to prevent firefox from making another 400 GB file.  I know i can just find it and delete occasionally, but i would really like to prevent it from existing in the first place!
