I wanted to be clear, I followed the steps to be sure that my itunes library didn't somehow get corrupted, I have an iMac 2013 w/Fusion Drive. I have tried the following:

  1. log out of iTunes Store, Turn off iTunes Match
    1. turned itunes store back on
    2. turned on itunes match back on

      error 4010 persist

  2. moved.xml file and .itl file out of itunes library, started itunes from scratch
    1. itunes re-created itl file
    2. imported playlists from .xml
    3. Logged into iTunes Store
    4. Logged into iTunes Match

      error 4010 persist

  3. Connected to iTunes Store account removed my computer from iTunes Match

    error 4010 persists

I have not checked my macbook pro to see if that computer is still linked up, but I have my iPhone and iPads and iPods all logged in for a total of 8 devices. :-/

I just spent an hour and a half with tech support and the issue is being escalating to the "Apple Engineers" to see if it can be resolved on the back end. I have the direct phone number to the high-level support staff member I was working with. He will be calling me back within 4 days. If he comes up with a solution that we can do on our end I will let you know. We tried everything we could do on our end. Match is working perfectly on phone and iPad... not working on MBP.

exact error message which occurs during the iTunes Match update sequence on my MBP:

We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (4010).

There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.

I have been getting this error for months... hopefully soon it will be resolved. My support tech (Mike) could not have been better. I am optimistic they will fix this now that they know it exists... this error/problem was a first for him.

I had this problem also and tried a few more troubleshooting steps (none of which worked), but they might help someone.

  • Sign out of Apple Id in iTunes, then sign back in
  • Turn on iTunes Match <-- didn't work, still had 4010 error
  • Turn off/on iTunes Match while holding the Option Key <-- didn't work, still had 4010 error

  • Quit iTunes
  • Go into Finder -> Music and rename the "iTunes" folder to "iTunes Backup"
  • Hold down Option key while clicking on the iTunes icon to start it (this asks you to create a new iTunes library)
  • Created a new iTunes folder (Music -> iTunes)
  • Sign into Apple Id in iTunes, then turn on iTunes Match while holding the Option Key <-- didn't work, still had 4010 error

Physically walk to another iMac and sign into iTunes and turn on iTunes Match while holding the Option Key <-- didn't work, still had 4010 error

At this point, after having tested on multiple iMacs, I figured that the problem was not with my local iTunes, but something larger (on Apple's end).

Apparently, if you can't access iTunes Match on multiple computers, then the problem could be with your account and you will need to contact Apple Support. I ended up describing my situation on the support page here - https://getsupport.apple.com/, and had them call me. I spoke to Anastasia and she had to bump me up to another technician, Brandon. He suggested that I delete the Album from iTunes...but alas, I cannot get access to the album to delete it without iTunes Match working.

Brandon finally spoke with an Engineer and they said that the issue was on my Apple Id Account and that they'd have to place the account into troubleshooting mode (which means giving Apple access to your account) so that they could figure out the problem. Of course, I wanted this fixed, so I let them. I'll hear back in 3-4 days what the engineers find.

Update:

IT specialist had me create a "Test" user profile with Admin privileges on my MBP, login to iTunes under new profile . I then signed into iTunes match. Successfully was able to sign into see all of my music in the iTunes match cloud. no "Error 4010" while signed in under new user profile.

This is a user specific issue and is now be further escalated.... I will keep in touch.

Here is the solution to this error 4010:

Here is a summary of what resolved your issue, and how to troubleshoot it.

1. Hold Option when clicking on iTunes to launch the application.

2. Click create new Library.

3. Try turning on iTunes Match

4. If issue is resolved this means there is corruption in the iTunes Library.

5. To resolve the issue quit iTunes from the menu bar and then via Finder delete iTunesMusicLibrary.xml and iTunesLibrary.itl from ~/Music/iTunes/

6. Relaunch iTunes and issue should be resolved.

your music is still physically on your hard drive although now all
