Q: Switching focus between two monitors

On OS X 10.9.5 in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Mission control I have setup hot keys to switch between however many desktops I may have open at a given time. I frequently edit code, text or whatever on two monitors and want to be able two switch focus back and forth between them with a single keyboard shortcut. The issue is that my current shortcut keys only seem to change the focus if the desktop is not already up on one of the screens. This is very frustrating as I generally want to switch focus between two desktops that are both already showing on their respective monitors.

As an example say I have three desktops open: Space 1 on Monitor A, Space 2 on Monitor B and Space 3 on Monitor B. If I have Space 1 in focus on Monitor A and Space 2 up (but out of focus) on Monitor B I can not move my focus directly from Space 1 to Space 2. I can however switch focus from Space 1 to Space 3 without any problems. I can also always switch from Space 1 to Space 3 and then back to Space 2 but this is a bit of a headache and only works if you have multiple spaces on each monitor.

Any ideas how one could easily switch focus between two spaces that are already showing on two different monitors? Ideally it would be something that could be done in a single keystroke (i.e. not command + tab to the appropriate application) and also not require third party software. Also, is the fact that my current shortcuts don't do this a bug or somehow by design?
