Q: How to fix video bloat in Pages.app

The Pages app is probably the very best way to create an ePub eBook that contains video. These ePub-based eBooks can be read by the iBooks app and many other eReaders that support the ePub 3 standard.

Unfortunately, Pages tries to "optimize" the video that you would include in your ePub eBook and it does so rather badly. The file size of your  eBook can easily double or triple without any discernible improvement in what your audience sees. I call it video bloat.

This blog post documents video bloat at the hands of Apple Pages and, most importantly, shows you how to fix it.

Of course it shouldn't be necessary to perform surgery on your Pages ePub exports but between now and the time that Apple fixes this problem, that is all that we can do other than suffer unnecessarily huge ePub files.
