Old Mac Pro

I Have and 2007 Mac Pro dual core, and I'm out of memory, purchased 2 2g of ram today and put it into my Mac. It says it has 8 G but it doesn't seem like it's

running correctly. I have the two 2 G's and 4 1 G's and 2 2 512mb cards.

I Put the two 2 G's in the first slots in the card A after that I place 1 G cards. The bottom card has the remainder 2 1G's cards and then the two 512. Have done some incorrectly. Help.

What makes you think that it is not running correctly?

What specific memory did you purchase?

Discard the 2 x 512MB DIMMs, they add heat and offer little in performance.

Move your system onto a 256GB SSD $133 will give the best improvement in performance.

Seeing how 2x2GB kits are $23 I would get another set.

Out of memory? or out of disk space? and when did you last upgrade your drives?

Also putting data on separate drive makes sense and helps performance.

To clone and move or setup a system drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner.

Ok, first thing Thank you for your help. My Mac is a 2x2.66 GHz Dual core

intel Xeon

I now have * GB of 667 MHz /DDr2 FB DIMM only had 5 before

I was like a switch was turn off, it just started to run slow and the

spinning ball of death was have a field day. it was spinning all the time.

had a little mix up with Fry's but i purchased 4 GB of ram with plans to

purchase 4 more.

However with the extra ram it still is running the slow, the ball is don't

up as often but it still runs. It's and old machine I know but it was

running find.

I'm a Video Photographer and Editor and I need this to keep working. I run

Adobe CS6 suite on it and only one program will not run on it mainly

because it only runs the next OS I have and only can advance to the 10.7. 5

OS.

At first I thought I was putting the ram in the wrong order. Someone help

me to find out if the ram was working and they are all working. I also

found out that I have 4 sticks of 512 ram not just 2. I going to try and

afford 2 more 2GB of ram. I hope this will help.

I am a photographer and Video Editor, I have very little computer experience. The above information is above me. I like the idea of better performance but I have no idea where to start with the information you gave me. I you can give me information about the upgrade I would love to look into do it.

I will be replacing the 512 MB cards as soon as I can

First, put 'Memory Clean' aside and just use Activity Monitor. There is no advantage to having idle free memory, when the memory used for Inactive memory (mostly buffer previous disk Reads) can be freed instantly to provide free memory. Inactive memory also provides some speedups if you re-read certain data.

Second, make certain you have adequate Backups, because one strong indicator if impending Drive failure is the constant beachball. How old and what size is your boot drive?

The hatter has jumped two steps ahead along this same 'replace your Drive' line and suggested that you consider upgrading to a Boot-only drive on an SSD. This article has more discussion on the subject:

User Tip: Creating a lean, fast Boot Drive

Look around! people just clone the system to SSD (with adapter) and bang, that is it.

But you can do better. The Samsung XP941 128 or 256GB device

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J9V53M6/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=AT VPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1CCXX1XZ7KHAJD04CAWC&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p =1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop

and Lycom adapter for $24, put it in 4x or 8x PCIe slot and be blown away. Bootable, and that is fast, and rare for a Mac Pro 1,1 (bootable PCIe cards are next to non-existent).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MYCQP38/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1& smid=A2IRJS1D1489E6

again just look on Amazon along with FBDIMMs.

http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-APPLE-Arch-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/ref=sr_1 _3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1420496572&sr=1-3&keywords=667mhz+fbdimm+mac+pro+ne mix

And at this point, cloning a system should be 2nd nature. Plus using an SSD has been around for 8 yrs, there are new threads every day and basically the same cookbook. Cloning is cloning. just buy a copy of CCC.

Hello everyone, thank you for all of your help in trying to fix my problems. Grant Bennet_Alder has suggested, disk space may be my main problem. As I got your email this image showed up on my screen

so it would seem I need to get a lager hard drive or do the boot drive as you suggested. I may be able to get the parts and put them in myself with help ( you and maybe youtube ) but moving data could be above my pay scale. Can you give me an idea what I should do.

Jan 5, 2015 3:19 PM in response to Lorenzo Townsend1

just fire up Carbon Copy Cloner, it is easy to use and follow and has improved its user interface; lets you select or unselect user folders (if moving the system, keep the core user Library of course).

Leave your current drive as is, but do try to copy and delete some to free up space, you should not be using it as is.

Clone the system.

You can manually use the Finder and copy the entire "/Users/my-home-user-account/" to another drive.

WD Black 2TB are excellent and downright affordable.

A 256GB SSD would be more than adequate and easy to do.
