From the link I provided here are the requirements for your iMac which clearly shows that Windows 8 is not supported.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I made the assumption that creating the bootcamp partition would be as simple as it was in 10.6.8. When I opened the help section, (which I did with the belief that it would tell me everything I needed to know about the job), it clearly stated that I had the choice of either windows OS- no caviats or anything else that would lead me to believe my equipment wasn't up to the job. Had there been any warning whatsoever that the "you can use 7 or 8" statement was conditional on equipment, I'd have done the research you suggest.
I appreciate your guidance, but in this case, I feel Apple was very misleading by making a generalized claim that could easily mislead those who have less than professional knowledge.
