Q: I want to create a back up to free space.

I'm a little confused about ICLOUD vs ICLOUD DRIVE? I would like to free up space on my external and internal HDS. I'm uncertain as to how to upload to the cloud with out creating a duplicate copy on HD? I just want to store these files some place safe and free up my HD. Can i do this..? It's unclear. When ever i transfer to the ICLOUD drive... it makes another copy on my internal? What am i doing wrong ?

See this recent discussion: iCloud drive

If you enable iCloud Drive on your Mac, all files you move to iCloud Drive will be mirrored on your Mac, this will make it possible to access them, when you are offline and also to make backups.

If you turn off iCloud Drive, all local copies will be removed, and you can access the files in iCloud only using the web interface, very cumbersome.
