The Sims 3 on Macbook Air

Hi there. I just got a Macbook Air this Christmas. The following are the 'About My Mac' details:

-It is a 13-inch from early 2014

-Processor: 1.4Ghz Intel Core i5

-Memory 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3

-Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB

-120GB

I download The Sims 3 and 4 Expansion Packs onto my Macbook Air. As I started to run it on my Macbook, the fan made a very loud running noise that I had not heard before so I quit The Sims 3 and after a few minutes the noise of the fan went away. I just want to know if it is normal that the fan made this noise? Is it safe for me to play The Sims 3 on my Macbook Air even though the fan makes this noise? I don't want to play it on my Macbook if it will damage it or make it slower, etc, as I want my Macbook to last. Thank you!

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
