Browser hijacker - smartsearch.net

Hi,

I have a browser hijacker called the smart search.net. I have been reading up on what to do to remove this from my mac OSX 10.7.5. No doubt from downloading something for free as I have read up about this hijacker on various pages

In system preferences I can change the homepage back to google and I have no extensions listed (I have also turned the extensions off) but when I force quit safari, the smart search.net is then automatically set as the default page again and I have to manually change it back to google. Also it keeps opening other pages when I have typed in a web address e.g. pages for malware removal such as Mackeepr..

I have followed the tips on here Thesmartsearch.net?!? though unsure if I should trust adwaremedic and install it to remove it..(no offence just no sure about installing something else).

I have removed some files and put them in the trash..I spotted InstallMac and some other genio files in the library using finder. I also have these launch agents an daemons:

Not too sure if the .game.agent and daemon are the culprits…as I think the others are genuine from what I have read

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.game.agent.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.adobe.fpsaud.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.remotepairtool.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.game.daemon.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.game.helper.plist

Any ideas if I should remove any of these; this goes above my technical level…

It's perfectly reasonable to be reluctant to install something new. AdwareMedic should fix the problem, but instead, you can also follow the manual removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide. It will help you manually remove everything that AdwareMedic would remove automatically.

You installed a variant of the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.

This malware has many variants. Anyone else finding this comment should not expect it to be applicable.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.game.agent.plist

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

Repeat with each of these lines:

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.game.daemon.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.game.helper.plist

Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:

/Library/Application Support/game
/System/Library/Frameworks/v.framework

The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.

This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.

In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.

Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked

Install system data files and security updates

if it's not already checked.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

You may also have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.

Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist

If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.

One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.

After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.

If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.

Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.

In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked

Install system data files and security updates

if it's not already checked.

Hi

My browsers got hijacked by SmartSearch.

I used AdwareMedic and Avast to clean my system up and now all my browser - Safari, Google Chrome and Firefox appear to be normal, except for one detail:

none of them will open Google Search or Facebook.

In Safari I get the message: Cant open the page because Safari cant establish a secure connection to the server "www.google.com.br"

That is so weird because they will open any other page.

Thank you

Isabela

Is www.google.com.br actually the right page you're trying to use? If so, one simple possibility is that your computer's date and/or time is wrong. That can cause these kinds of failures.

If the date and time are correct, and you're being redirected to www.google.com.br when you didn't want to go there, there's something else going on.

Hello Thomas

Thank you for your fast reply!

Yes my date and time are correct

and yes, I want to use www.google.com.br and www.facebook.com

and I get the message: "Cant open the page because Safari cant establish a secure connection to the server ..."

This happened after I got infected with SmartSearch and used Avast to clean the Mac.

Any thoughts?

thank you

Isabela
