"IPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image."

How can I get Christmas photos off this iPhone 5 so I can upgrade to the iPhone 6?

Another possible way to move your pictures off the iPhone would be to share them directly from the Photos application using either Messages or Mail.

You coud also set up iCloud Photo Sharing. See this article -
