How can I email a large .mov file from my mac book pro? I get the error message "Your message has size 78 MB, which exceeds 41.7 MB, the maximum allowed by the server"

You can't.
78 MB is far too large for any mail server to be able to handle. You are going to have to use something like DropBox instead of Mail.
Can I zip the file and then send? If I can't email it, can I put it on a cd?
If your close to the person Air Drop it or use google drive or Dropbox to share the file with them. If you have a gmail account you have a google drive so you could upload the file to your drive and share the .mov with them by clicking the share button and entering there email it doesn't have to be a gmail but its preferred.
Since the .mov format is already compressed running it through zip again will buy you little or nothing and it fact it may even get larger. Check into DropBox or the other services like that.
So as Tristan says you can use Google Drive and share it. My friend had a site and I could just drop huge files on it which people with access could pick up.
