Apple Maps gives poor directions?

I want to like Apple Maps but I keep running into the same problem with getting directions. It gives me one, maybe two options, and no more.

In Google Maps, you can drag to change the route, and explore other ideas for a trip.

With Apple Maps I can't do that. I can't customize a route. I can only choose what Apple suggests.

Am I right? Am I missing something?

BTW, I'm posting this in the Mavericks community because this edit page won't allow me to specify the one for Yosemite. Huh?
