Q: Corrupted RAW photos in iPhoto 9.6 (Yosemite) from Nikon D800

Since upgrading to Yosemite (OS 10.10.1) and iPhoto 9.6, all my RAW photos imported into iPhoto from my Nikon D800 appear to be corrupted.

The thumbnails contain pixellated boxes over the image.  It appears that if I go into Edit mode within iPhoto and adjust anything (such as Enhance, etc), the pixellated box goes away and the image is restored.  That's one way to fix the problem, but in researching I see that others have fixed the problem by removing the RawCamera.bundle and RawCameraSupport.bundle from the System Library and downloading a newer version (OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support)

The problem is  --  the latest RAW Compatibility Update version for Yosemite 6.02 appears to be the one I currently am using (in my System Folder).

In that same article referenced above, my Nikon D800 is listed in an earlier version simply titled "Supported by Yosemite 10.10".

Could it be that the RAWCamera.bundle 6.02 is causing my problem and I need to go back to an earlier version?

If so, how do I do that?  The upgrade to Yosemite and the subsequent upgrade to its compatible iPhoto 9.6 was done at the same time - no backup in between.

MacBook (13-inch Late 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), iPhoto 9.6 (910.29)

You could try to downgrade to RAW support 6.01. It helped for the same camera in this case:

Re: Digital Camera Raw Compatibility 6.02 - Nikon D800

Make a backup of your system and try to downgrade the RAW support to version 6.01

To downgrade the RAW Support to the last version from before the last update try this:

    • To reinstall the 'RAW Compatibility Update' it is necessary to uninstall the currently installed raw support. Otherwise the installer will rightfully say, that you already have the latest version installed.
    • If your tests are showing that the problem happens also in a different user account, try this:

The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/CoreServices" Folder:

    • To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
    • Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G  (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder")  and copy and paste "/System/Library/CoreServices" into the text field. Click the "Go" button.
    • In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password. (don't empty the Trash, so you can put the files back, if need be)
    • Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site:
    • Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1777?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.

    Then restart your Mac.

Thanks!  I really appreciate the step-by-step explanation, too.  Will try.

Did not work.  New photo uploaded still appears with pixellated box.  Wonder how I get back one step further to what was originally issued with before 6.01?

Success with Version 4.09!   The steps work, but you have to go back far enough to find a version that works.

That is really surprising. We never had to go back that far. For most forum members it sufficed to go back to one or two versions. I hope, there is not something else wrong.

This happened to me too -- need to turn off Auto Update of Apps (Settings / App Store), or it will automatically update your iPhoto to the current RAW file that is our problem.
