Macbook Pro running extremely slow since updating to Yosemite

Hello All,

I am new to the community and I'm hoping your pooled expertise can assist me with my issues. I went ahead and posted the results of my diagnostic scan below. My main concerns are that my Macbook Pro is now extremely slow after OSX updates. Also, laptop is running extremely hot to touch. I have mentioned other ongoing issues. I offer thanks in advance for any assistance.

Problem description:

Macbook Pro 13":

Purchased in mid-2010.

Most Recent Issue (Main Concern):

(1) I recently updated OS X from Mountain Lion to Maverick. Computer began running extremely slow and “jerky.”

(1.1) Shortly after this I updated to OS X Yosemite. Computer runs, and types, even slower than before.

Ongoing Issues (Greater than one year):

(1) Extremely short battery life (may last two hours on full charge)

(2) Macbook runs extremely hot to touch (fan runs continuously but can’t begin to keep it cool)

(3) SD Card reader doesn't recognize/open an SD card when inserted.

Lex Cschellings Requested the Following:

No obvious elements in the list.

This may well be a dying disk and/or a very bad battery.

Do following:

make a new etrecheck list and in the problem description put what Applications->Utilities->SystemInformation says about the battery (under the Power heading in the left panel): give cycle count and battery condition.

Then post the link in a new thread.

In the meantime the crash report is probably a French Dictionary issue (font? garcon garçon) you have installed, uninstall that and see if it happens again.

1. Battery OK, but just: almost 1000 cycles means it is nearing the end of life: as long as condition says "normal" it is OK, but keep an eye on it.

Maybe a disk problem, see at the end.

2. There is high memory pressure, but not because you have too little ram (although 8GB would be better, it is not the cause).

3. What should help is following:

Remove every entry in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath.

Restart after that and do not use the Chrome browser.

You better even uninstall Chrome (a resource muncher and unsafe), If you do not want to use Safari, use Firefox or Opera: both fast and safe. Restart after uninstalling Chrome.

4. Update Flashplayer and remove the 2 AdobePDFViewer plugins in InternetPlugins (not the cause of your issues).

About the disk: The SMART status in DiskUtility is not very sure (as has been proven here several times), even when done form the RestorePartition. Thus I propose to download the trial version of DriveDx from binaryfruit.com. Install, start (it is in the menubar), choose "save drive health report" then "open DriveDx application" in which you see (explained) all kinds of predictive information based on experimental and experience formulas. Open the health report, copy the contents and paste it in your next post.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Lex,

I'm not sure if I did this correctly, or if posting this is what you meant, but here is the DriveDX Health report.

Lex,

Here is a sampling of the log messages from the console. I have no idea what is relevant; I tried to parse it down to a manageable amount of entries. I was going to post the log generated from startup but it was quite lengthy. Hopefully you can make sense of this. You have been a great help thus far.

Lex,

I removed all login items listed in < SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems >. There were only four items.

I uninstalled Google Chrome. I don't know if that also removed all associated files. How to check/verify this?

Regarding point #2, I haven't added more RAM. I believe I presently have 4GB's of RAM. Am I able to add four additional GB's, for a maximum of 8GB's?

I have updated the Flashplayer and removed the two AdobePDFviewer plugins.

Regarding the DriveDX Health Report:

I am concerned about a few results. Perhaps you could expound on them as to their seriousness, if any.

1) Load Cycle Count currently @ 720,609 (normal range for a laptop drive reportedly being between 300K - 600K) - Load Cycle status is @ 1%

2) UDMA CRC Error Count currently @ 20,154. My Macbook Pro crashed in mid-2013 and required repair. The tech's reported that the Interface Cable failed. This was replaced.

3) Temperature - Do you see any reason for concern with regard to the drive internal temp or airflow temp?

4) Hardware ECC Recovered ??? Anything here?

Jan 6, 2015 5:02 PM in response to DaVinci Medic

1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.

2. Follow these instructions, or thesefor OS X 10.8 or earlier.

3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked

Enable Power Nap while on battery power

if it's shown (it may not be.)

4. You can also try resetting the SMC.

Jan 7, 2015 12:01 AM in response to DaVinci Medic

The DriveDx is a bit stern about disk temps, but the temp is good within specs.

Your disk is OK, but ageing a bit. No problems.

Same as your battery.

Ram: you have low Page-Outs thus in principle you have enough. But of course 8GB is better.

Perhaps there is a problem perhaps with the "identity" database in MS Office. In older MS Office versions it was crashing at 4GB size and then irreparable, but in later versions that was not the case anymore, but still there is a risk... This is the central database (docs, mails and so on). Perhaps not using Office (and Outlook) for a few days, to see if that helps? Make backups. It is so long ago that I used MS Office that I do not remember, there should be a rebuild or such.

I agree with Linc: SMC reset, perhaps we have said that already before.

In the near future you have to replace the battery and later on perhaps the disk, at the same time you can add 4GB of Ram.
