USB SuperDrive doesn't work!!

I have a MacBook Pro that is a few months old. I had to buy a USB SuperDrive to play DVDs, CDs, etc. because despite the $2,300 price tag the computer doesn't have one. Instructions with the drive are minimal, I just [plug it into a port and it's supposed to work. 95% of the time it doesn't work, but I try various things and it will sometimes suddenly turn on and start to work. Most of the time it does nothing and I can't get it to work. I downloaded the OS X Yosemite, but now it is even less likely to work at all. Is there something I should be doing to activate it? Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
