How do I get my 2010 BMW 328i xDrive to recognize my iPhone 6?

I have a 2010 BMW 328i xDrive. I tried connecting my iPhone 6 (running OS 8.1.2) thru both the Y-cable supplied (with an 8 pin adapter on it) as well as thru the Apple provided USB cable. Both wires allow the phone to charge, incite a pop-up on my phone asking to trust the computer, however when I try to change the car stereo to USB it says Insert USB. When I try to play music it just plays music through the phone speaker. The phone is able to connect via blue tooth, but will not play music. Does anyone know how to get my car to recognize the iPhone when its plugged in, or to play music through the bluetooth?

The Dealer said there was not an update and informed me that even the 2014 328s do not work with the iPhone 6. The bluetooth only looks like its for making calls rather than playing music; it seems I will have to play music through an AUX cord and then just plug my phone in with the cable to charge it....

however the adapter is likely not an official apple one.

that is most likely the issue most if not all counterfeits acrually say in VERY small print that sound is not supported

I Have 2 xBeemers the '13 model is fine with connections and more importantly the other an 07 Z4 uses the BMW iPod connection kit and uses a genuine Apple adapter and it works perfectly with iOS 8.1.2 (iPhone 5S )

Not sure BMW Bluetooth was A2DP ( music capable ) compliant back in 2010

You didn't really say if you've tried any troubleshooting or not. For BT I'd start by going into settings on your phone and in your car and 'forget' the pairings then try to pair again. I'd also suggest you check with your dealer to see if there's an update available. I've read a few posts where an automaker had updates available and the problem was solved. I don't recall if BMW was one of them.
