hi My Macbook Pro keeps showing a grey blank bar on startup and some of the letters on the keyboard do not work when this happens. no anti-virus or software upgrade seems to work. I am using yosemite.... thank you

Based on the pic you included in your post, it would appear you may be having an issue at or just before the Login window. I'm unclear if you normally have your Mac set to auto-login, but either way you may want to check for any login item issues, as noted in the following article:

You may also want to try a Safe Boot and see if the issue persists:

One thing you can try is verbose mode during boot. It may indicate what is causing the hang.
