Q: Yosemite broke my iMac camera

My built-in camera on my iMac was working fine until I "upgraded" to OS X Yosemite. Now the camera will not turn on and the computer does not even recognize that there is a camera in the system. A search revealed that many others have reported this problem. It's obviously software related since it worked fine with OS X Mavericks. Do I have to downgrade back to Mavericks if I want my camera back? This is a mid-2010 iMac that works fine for my use, so I hope I don't get an answer that it's out of warranty and I need to buy a new computer. It worked fine before this "upgrade". Hope someone can help me! Thanks.

    To fix your iSight, shut down computer. Reboot in safe mode (press power button and then hold shift key down). After computer boots, restart again.  Hopefully, your iSight will start working again.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. I had tried that before.

     

    One thing that concerns me about when I try to start this computer in safe boot mode. I don't see anything that says Safe Mode when it restarts. When I've started other computers in Safe Boot Mode, it always said that in red letters on restart. This one doesn't, and the display flickers horizontal lines as it restarts. Any ideas from that description?

    I have found the issue to be occurring for myself also.

     

    It seems that resetting the SMC works, as I did it and when restarting the laptop the iSight worked fine, buuuuut that was a couple of weeks ago, and I just tried it again and again it is not working.

     

    It is listed under the USB HUB in System Information, so the MacBook knows it is there, but it will not turn on in Facetime, PhotoBooth, Skype etc.

     

    Would like a permanent fix, but for an immediate fix I would try resetting the SMC, as I am about to do again myself

    I just noticed my camera is gone from my Macbook Air as well. Tried to use Face Time and nothing there. I can't believe Apple hasn't fixed this yet.

    Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
