Enable Verbose Mode permanently?

I've been going through all sorts of diagnostics and repair procedures for my MacBook Pro (late 2011). It's interesting, and perhaps useful, to see the startup and shutdown commands; but I can't always hit Command-V at startup to enable verbose mode. Also, I'm not sure if that will work on shutdown. It would be a nice way to ease my impatience when I'm wondering whether the machine is busy or stuck, if nothing else.

So, is there a way to enable that permanently, so I will always see what's happening during startup and shutdown?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Open the Terminal utility and run the following command:

sudo nvram boot-args="-v"

Rebooting your system should have the system invoke verbose mode at every boot. You can clear this by running the following command:

sudo nvram boot-args=""
