Is it possible to have a shortcut for the characters in the character palette?

I recommend this Applescript:

do shell script "open /System/Library/Components/CharacterPalette.component/Contents/SharedSupport/Ch arPaletteServer.app"

Save it as "Application" to launch with a doubleclick. From the Applescript menu it can just be a compiled script.

You can also launch it from Terminal with just the shell command, if you go that way.

Thanks for your reply, but this is not what I am asking.
Let me rephrase my question.
I would like to have a shortcut for the degree symbol I am adding from the character palette, so that whenever I want to add it I won't have to open it. Instead, I would like to have a keyboard shortcut and when I press the keys combination add the degree symbol to my text.
Thanks again.
