I have an iPhone 6 on Verizon with iOS 8.1. More often than not, when someone sends me a text message, I receive it two or three times. I will be responding back to the message sometimes and get interrupted with the same message. Obviously this is very frustrating and never had this issue before upgrading from the 5 to the 6. Help!

What did Verizon say when you reported the problem to them? SMS and MMS messaging is a carrier feature. The phone only displays what it receives... It doesn't create the duplicates on its own.
I am having the same problem. I have iphone 6, on ATT. I have had several times where I get an SMS txt that repeats. The interval is long, about 4 - 6 hrs, but I have gotten the same message 10 times over two days. Makes no sense. I've tried restarting the phone etc. I think it has to do with relaying SMS to the computer or something, but it is horribly annoying.
And what did AT&T say when you reported the problem to them?
Have you ever tried to do that? Got nowhere.
Its not every message that gets repeated, its only happened a few times.

Since I never had this problem before, I wondered if it had something to do with the SMS forwarding feature in iOS 8 or similar. I have turned it off, but didn't stop the problem.
I've been with AT&T for years. Too many... I've reported issues plenty of times. You just have to work the system. Be polite and ask the person you're talking to to escalate the call. They can see every call, SMS and MMS message that goes in or out of your phone. They should be able to trace the duplicates back to at least determine if they're originating within the AT&T network, or whether they are originating from the senders network.
This should have nothing to do with SMS/MMS forwarding.
I keep getting repeat text messages (NOT repeated alerts). Help!
