Depending on what you are looking at specifically, you may be seeing your Camera Roll (photos you have taken or saved directly on your iPhone), or you may be looking at the general Photos library (including photos that have been synced back to your device from your Mac). This may explain the discrepancy you are seeing. If you are looking to clear up room on your iPhone, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
See how much storage you've used on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
Move from your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a lower capacity device - Apple Support

Jan 11, 2015 4:09 AM in response to brenden dvby Kevinjones10,Hi Brenden,
Thank you very much for your reply. Yeh the 2000 odd photos must be all my photos synced to my mac but when i connect the phone to iTunes why are they showing up on my phones memory because they are not on my phone but on my mac. My camera roll actually says i have 237 photos on and not 2000 so don't know why the phones is using so much space for my photos.
Il have a look at the links you sent really appreciate it,
Thanks again,
Kevin

If you are using a Mac with iPhoto, when you connect your iPhone to the Mac and open iPhoto, it should show the phone and offer to import the photos, and after they are imported, offer to delete them from your phone.
