I accidentally deleted the work section of calendar and lost all of my entries. How can I recover them?

Restore your calendar from wherever you are syncing it to. Syncing to a supported application on the computer? If not, if you have a backup of the device when the calendar was there, then restore to that backup.

I restored the iPhone icloud backed up information. My calendar then showed all of the missing data, but whilst using the calendar app I was asked for my apple ID, which I entered and my calendar returned with all of the data lost?

Do you have the calendar in iCloud? It sounds as if the iCloud calendar then overwrote the backup. I'm not exactly sure where to go from there, since I do not use iCloud. This support document on restoring from an iCloud backup might help you. Get help restoring from an iCloud backup - Apple Support
