Q: iMac won't read some CDs

My 2007 iMac (24") will not recognize some audio CDs.  At first, I wondered if the CDs in question were dirty, but even some brand-new, first-time-out-of-the-package CDs are not being recognized, while others are.

I'll put the disc in, the drive will go "zerg-zerg" about 10 or 11 times, over about 70 seconds, and then it spits the disc out.  Other discs are recognized immediately and ripped to iTunes with no problem.

My mid-2007 iMac has 4 GB of RAM and is running Yosemite.  I am using iTunes 12.0.1.26.

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).

Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd

Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.

You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.

At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

This will bring up the Help Menu.

You might try using a DVD cleaning disk in your optical drive.  One that uses only dry brushes (no liquid).  It could be some dust buildup on the laser with some CDs being more easily read than others.

Are you able to read some CDs that are from the same manufacturer/music label as some that you can read?
