I have an external backup.
I disabled local snap shots.
OS X 10.10.1
Where is this 161GB of other coming from?
I can no even find it... see screen shot below.
I'm stumped... Any ideas?

Go step by step and test.
1. Start up in Safe Mode.

2. Empty Trash.

4. Delete old iOS Devices Backup.
iTunes > Preferences > Devices
Highlight the old Backups , press “Delete Backup” and then “OK”.

5. Re-index Macintosh HD.
This will take a while. Wait until it is finished.
System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

6.Try OmniDiskSweeper. This will give the storage size details of the items.

Select Macintosh HD and click “Sweep Selected Drive” at the bottom.
Delete the files yo don’t want to keep.
Be careful. Delete only the files that can be safely be deleted.
Thank you for the reply. I had already tried all of those things but none had an impact on the issue. It turned out to be an issue with journaling on the drive. I restarted in safe mode and ran disc repair. It took about 15 minutes but resolved the problem. One the techies at work assisted me. He said SSD is very fast and since my drive is also encrypted when I turned off time machine local snapshots the drives journal likely didn't keep up.
I won't lie. I have no idea what that all means and I am likely not retelling it correctly. None the less: safe mode, repair disk and problem solved.
