lost mode

So I dropped my iphone 5s and somebody took it. The celualr data was turned off so when i activated lost mode, it says its pending till it connects to the internet. So my question is, even though my iphone has passcode if soemone restores it, will lost mode still work even after that? I ha dit updated to the latest ios. And if my phone is connected to itunes, will it block itself?

If it gets totally reset the lock is irrelevant - all your data is gone after a factory reset.

The trouble is that to be able to factory reset it they will need to unlock the passcode first.

If they try to use iTunes to factory restore it they will still need to unlock it.

The only way to factory restore is with the device unlocked & since you had a passcode it seems unlikely that will happen.

iTunes also requires a 'pairing record' so not just any computer can be used to read the data on the device - it needs an existing agreement to access the device content - they could read it if they had your computer & the device password. Since they have neither I don't believe you have any worries.

Also bear in mind that iOS devices need to be activated, so even if it is wiped (I don't believe this is possible) it cannot be used without connecting to iTunes & activating with Apple - Apple do not activate stolen devices. iCloud's 'Find My iPhone' also prevents re-activation too. Basically all thief can get out of these devices is spare parts.

There is a lot wrong with this post.

True

False. All they have to do is put it into recovery mode or DFU mode to restore it.

False. See above.

Not technically correct, but it's close enough. The data on the phone can not be read by someone else without the passcode.

Apple do not activate stolen devices.

False. Apple is not a law enforcement agency. Apple does not maintain a database of "stolen" devices. Apple doesn't care who's holding the phone when they activate it.

True. Provided Find my iPhone was activated, the phone is unusable without the credentials for the account used to lock it. That's called Activation Lock.

I forgot about DFU mode, but it doesn't help anyone access data on the device does it? The data is still protected in storage by the passcode & the encryption. DFU mode doesn't undo that does it?

What have I got wrong here? To read any iOS device content you need to unlock iOS & 'trust' the connected device. Isn't it the case that a stranger cannot do that without the passcode? iOS also revokes the trust after a restart too - which is why we get 'unlock to sync' dialogs in iTunes.

That is the case for Sebas2314, it shouldn't be reused without consent from the connected Apple ID. Obviously now would be a good time to review your password habits & make sure they are all unique & strong Sebas2314.
