Odd split screen on iphone ios8

Hello all-

Before and after upgrading to 8.1.2 on iPhone 6 Plus- ive noticed the phone going into some bizaare split screen mode, that doesn't seem to serve a useful function. Am I missing something? Or is this a bug? Pic below is what it looks like. It happens touching the screen, and sometimes rotating to landscape. I'm confused...

Howdy ksqmusic,

After taking a look at your post and picture, it appears you have activated Reachability. To learn more about this, and how to turn it off, please see the information outlined below.

Reachability

If you have iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, and are using it in portrait orientation, lightly tap twice on the Home button to slide the screen down (bringing the top half closer to your thumb).

Disable Reachability. Tap Settings > General > Accessibility, then tap Reachability (below Interaction).

Reachability makes it easier to reach the icons at the top of the screen on the larger phones. Not everyone finds it useful but I certainly appreciated it when using my iPhone 6 with one hand.
