Jan 6, 2015 11:02 PM in response to Hughes-p.c.by John Galt,I've checked on line and am being told to download all kinds of crazy virus cleaners. I think that's how I got it in the first place.
You're right - don't do that. It's not necessary. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it. "Virus cleaners" won't help. Generally speaking all so-called "cleaners" are to be avoided, since they'll only add to your misery.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully.

Jan 7, 2015 4:23 AM in response to Hughes-p.c.by thomas_r.,SearchProtect (aka Conduit, aka Trovi) is adware that is very invasive. You can find removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide or in Apple's document on removing adware. If you use the latter resource, please note that it does not make any mentions of modifications to Firefox that are made by some variants of this adware. If you use Firefox, these modifications are not trivial to reverse, so you should delete Firefox and the Firefox profile. For more info on this, see:
